Child Safety Recommendation Creates A Dilemma For Parents And The Airlines
SAN JOSE, CA.-- NOVEMBER 4, 2005 -- “Infants and children deserve the same protection that
is provided to other airline passengers,” says NTSB Acting Chairman Mark Rosenker.
The FAA recommends it, but won’t make the use of carseats mandatory. Bringing a
carseat makes it better for the child, but it can be a problem for the parent.
“During takeoff, landing, and turbulence, adults are required to be buckled up, baggage
and coffee pots are stowed, computers are turned off and put away, yet infants and
toddlers need not be restrained. This is an unnecessary risk to our children,” said
Rosenker.
The NTSB recommends that infants and small children be restrained on airlines in a
manner appropriate to their size. That recommendation has been on the Board’s list of
“Most Wanted” safety improvements since 1999. The FAA recently announced that it
will not require the use of approved child restraints but will allow their use on a strictly
voluntary basis.A parent traveling alone is already highly stressed traveling with one child and if she has
two; the task can be completely overwhelming. Bringing the carseat on board the
airplane could be the 20-pound straw that breaks the camels back.“There are things they can do to make their job easier,” says Kerry Williams, a San Jose
mother of two. After experiencing similar travel problems, Kerry and her father patented
an attachment with wheels and a luggage handle for carseats. The attachment, called the
gogo Kidz Travelmate, basically turns the carseat into a two-wheeled stroller allowing
the parent to wheel both the carseat and the child together through the airport and right on
the plane. Depending on the needs at the destination, the gogo Kidz also can eliminate
the need to bring a separate stroller on the trip.Another product, The Pac Back by Cheeky Monkey Designs acts as a backpack for the
carseat but doesn’t allow the parent to transport the child in it.Kerry and father, a former high tech CEO, have been selling the gogo Kidz since April of
2005.
